APCOM is an acronym for Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry. The first APCOM was held in 1961 at the University of Arizona , and in the last 46 years has become one of the most reputable peer reviewed mining technology conferences in the world. Many of the mining pioneering research publications on subjects such as Geostatistics, Life of Mine Planning, Production Scheduling and other topics have been fist published in APCOM proceedings.

This volume contains the proceedings of the 33 rd APCOM Symposium hosted by the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of Chile . The Symposium was held from April 24 th to 27 th , 2007 in Santiago , Chile , for the first time in Latin America . A total of 107 peer reviewed papers written by authors from 22 countries are presented in this volume. The distribution of topics is as follows:

Subject
Geological Modeling, Resource Estimation and Geostatistics
20
Mine Design and Rock Mechanics
9
Mine Planning and Production Scheduling
16
Mine Unit Operations
6
Information Systems and Data Management
10
Process Optimization and Control
13
Emerging Technologies
17
Investment Planning, Project Evaluation and Management
9
Health, Safety and Environment

This volume also contains the publication in extenso of the opening ceremony address by Professor Don McKee entitled “Sustainable Challenges for the International Minerals Industry - A Way Forward for APCOM” and the Geostatistics session plenary address by Professor Daniel G. Krige “A Practical Review of Some Basic Concepts and Techniques for Mining Applications”.

The historical trend of computer and operations research applications in the mining industry seems quite clear: it has evolved from the analysis and optimization of rather small local problems to very large complex problems involving the complete production line, from mine production scheduling, treatment plants, smelters to product commercialization. Another topic that is now becoming the main APCOM subject is the handling of vast amounts of data, summarizing and extracting useful information, linking to other corporate or global systems, examining and evaluating millions of alternatives for applications such as real time optimization of production scheduling and process control, among others.

This proceedings also contains 17 papers dedicated to practical applications of Emerging Technologies. A vast range of topics is discussed, including novel GPS applications, wireless underground communication systems, robotics, and laser technology in underground surveying, among others.

This book should be of interest to the whole mining community, including exploration and mining geologists, production engineers and metallurgists, mining systems analysts, project evaluators, academics and researchers.
